Lutron Introduces a Quiet Fan-Speed Control Module!

Model #: HW-RPM-4FSQ-120

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

How many outputs are there on a module?

There are four outputs rated at 2A per output.

How many ceiling fans can I connect to one output?

Only one ceiling fan can be connected to any given output.

How many speeds does this module provide?

There are four speeds and OFF.

Is this truly a quiet fan-speed control, or is it just a dimmer output relabeled as a fan control?

This is a true "quiet" design. It does not use phase-control dimming outputs. You can expect the same performance that you get from Lutron's wallbox quiet fan-speed controls (e.g. NTFSQ, SFSQ-F, etc)

What is QuickStartTM?

This innovation ensures that the ceiling fan will start quickly and reliably, even at its lowest speed.

When will this product be available?

This product is in stock now.

When will this product be in the HWI Utility so that I can design it into jobs?

It was introduced in version 3.90 of the HWI utility, which was released in January, 2001.

What will this unit cost?

The list price is $600

Is there any plan for a 220V/240V module?

We have no plans to develop a 220V/240V module at this time. The capacitors required to run at 240V are too large to fit into the RPM case.

Does this unit work on all ceiling fans?

This module will not control ceiling fans that have electronic speed controls integrated into them. It is capable of controlling traditional "pull-chain" ceiling fans up to 2.0 Amperes (we are not aware of any fans that are larger than 2 Amps).

Does this unit work on ventilation fans?

Most ventilation fans that we are aware of do not work with a "quiet" speed control (the ones that are speed controllable usually want a phase-control output). The RPM-4FSQ is a not phase-control output - it is capacitive speed control output. Contact your ventilation fan manufacturer to find out if it is compatible with capacitive speed controls.

Does this unit come with "extra" terminal blocks like the HW-RPM-4M?

No. The RPM-4FSQ gets wired the same way that an RPM-4U gets wired. The neutral of the fan gets wired to the "Neutral" block and the "hot" for the fan motor gets wired to the "Dimmed Hot" block.

What should I do if the ceiling fan has a light kit?

Fans that have a pull-chain for the motor and the light kit should have the following wires: Fan hot, Light hot, Neutral (for fan and light). You can control the fan with an RPM-4FSQ and the light with an RPM-4U. We recommend the following: If the light is to be controlled by an RPM-4U, put it in the same enclosure as the RPM-4FSQ. Since they share a neutral, make sure you put the RPM-4U and the RPM-4FSQ on the same phase.

Do the fan modules have a manual override level?

The RPM-4FSQ is unaffected by the manual override function. All outputs will stay in their current state when the manual override is turned on or off. If the processor is turned off and the RPM-4FSQ stays powered, it will leave the fan outputs unchanged. However, if power to the RPM-4FSQ is removed and restored, all outputs on the module will be turned off and will remain off until the module begins to get communications from the processor.

Is there anything else I should know?

Do not connect this unit to lighting loads - the unit will be damaged if you do. Make sure you test all of the circuits with the bypass jumpers installed to verify that the loads are correctly connected. Use the pull-chain on the fan to set the fan on "full speed" after the load has been verified.
